Trayvon Martin To Get Science University Degree…..Posthumously
Trayvon Martin is set to get a posthumous bachelor of science degree in aviation from Florida Memorial University during the commencement ceremonies on May 13, the school announced on Facebook.
Martin, a black 17-year-old, was fatally shot by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in 2012.
The incident sparked a worldwide furore with Zimmerman claiming self-defence, and was acquitted of murder a year later.
According to the the college in Miami Gardens, Martin’s degree is in aeronautical science with a concentration in flight education “in honor of his love for planes and the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot, including his connection to Barrington Irving (a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Florida Memorial University; in 2007 he was the youngest person and only African American ever to fly solo around the world …).”
The University noted that the degree “is designated for students studying to become pilots” and that Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will accept the degree on behalf of their late son.
“Of special significance is awarding posthumously the Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation to Trayvon Martin. Sybrina, our alum, epitomizes strength and dignity as she uplifts other victims of violence while effecting change for a more equal and just society,” said Florida Memorial University President Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis.
